MONROEVILLE, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama North Softball team picked up a pair of conference victories over Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) on Thursday afternoon, March 20, extending the current winning streak to three games dating back to March 18. The Coyotes dominated in game one, securing a 12-4 run-rule win in five innings, while using a walk-off victory over the Pirates of Chatt Valley in game two. The two teams are scheduled to meet for an additional doubleheader this upcoming weekend in Phenix City, Ala.
Coastal North Softball improves to 6-26 this season following the two wins on Thursday, with the ACCC record advancing to 4-10.Â
Game One Recap
Across the first game on Thursday, Coastal North racked up 14 total hits in five innings. The Coyotes hit the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first with a single run, later adding three runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead. The big inning came in the fourth where the Yotes pushed across five runs, capitalizing on five Chatt Valley errors during the frame. One inning later, the Coyotes ended the game early with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 12-4 victory.Â
Destiny Holmes led the team with four RBIs in the win, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. Holmes' RBI single to left center field in the fifth was eventually the game-winner for Coastal North. Meanwhile, Jade Allen finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Jakayla Williams paced the team with four runs scored. Williams managed one RBI and a 2-for-2 batting line.
From the pitcher's circle, Madison Favre tossed a complete game in the winning effort, allowing six hits and three earned runs in five innings of work. Favre did not walk a batter and picked up three strikeouts. In total, Chatt Valley committed eight costly errors in the game compared to Coastal North's two errors. Seven of the Coyotes' 12 runs went down as earned runs.
Game Two Recap
It was a much closer battle in game two on Thursday, with the Pirates controlling the game early. Chatt Valley took a 2-0 lead across the first two innings before Coastal North pushed across a run in the bottom half of the second inning. After Chatt Valley added an additional run in the top of the fourth, the Coyotes took their first lead of the game in the bottom half with a four-run fourth inning.
Fast forward to the seventh and final frame of game two with Coastal North leading 5-3, Chatt Valley sparked a rally and scored one run off a homer to cut the deficit to just one run. The Pirates were able to get the tying run on base with two outs and later tied the game following an RBI double to left field. With the game now tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Coyotes opened the inning with a walk, followed by a fielder's choice. With a runner at first and just one out, the next three Coyotes reached base as the winning run came home following a bases-loaded walk drawn by Destiny Holmes.Â
Holmes finished the walk-off win with an additional RBI, bringing her total to five across the two games played. Isabella Griggs led the team with two RBIs in the second win of the afternoon, finishing 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Jakayla Williams, Jade Allen, and Alissa Holmes all picked up two hits a piece in the 6-5 victory.
From the rubber, Reanna Johnson finished with two innings of work as the starter, being relieved by Lydia Brewer for the remaining five frames. Brewer went down as the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs off seven hits and collecting three strikeouts.Â
Additional Meeting with Chatt Valley
The Coyotes will look to continue riding the momentum from Thursday's first sweep of the season, facing off with the Pirates again on Saturday, March 22 at 12:00 p.m. CT. Saturday's doubleheader will be played in Phenix City, Ala. near the Alabama/Georgia state line.
