Softball Splits ACCC Series with Wallace - Dothan

Coyotes Win Two at Home; Improve to 9-7 in Conference Action

DOTHAN, Ala. - Coming off a four-game sweep over Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) last week, Coastal Alabama - North Softball was back in ACCC action this weekend with a four-game set against Wallace Community College - Dothan (Ala.) beginning on Mar. 19 at home in Monroeville, Ala. The Coyotes kept the winning ways rolling with a sweep across two games played in Monroeville, winning 9-1 in game one and 13-11 in the nightcap. Two days later, the Governors of Wallace - Dothan snapped Coastal - North's six-game winning streak by winning both games played in Dothan.

The overall record moves to 10-21 on the season for the 'Yotes, while the ACCC record remains two games above .500 at 9-7.

Series Highlights

To begin the four-game series with Wallace - Dothan last Thursday in Monroeville, Coastal - North used a run-rule victory in six innings to set the tone. Wallace - Dothan opened the scoring with its one and only run of the game in the fourth inning, but Coastal responded with nine runs across the final three frames to seal the win. The Coyotes pushed across two runs in the sixth to enforce the run-rule win.

Destiny Holmes went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs, while Jakayla Williams finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs of her own. Abbie Huff also drove in two runs in the series-opening win, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Meanwhile, Delana Peters finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. In the pitcher's circle, Bayleigh Elton got the start and tossed 4 1/3 innings, striking out two and allowing one unearned run off six hits. Abbie Huff closed out the game with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Later that day, Coastal - North got out to a six-run lead in the first inning and held on for a 13-11 victory over Wallace - Dothan to open the series with two wins. The Governors closed the gap throughout the game, but the Coyotes survived the comeback. Both offenses were strong at the plate as Coastal collected 16 hits and Wallace - Dothan 14 in the high-scoring affair.

Destiny Holmes drove the middle of the lineup, leading the 'Yotes with a 4-for-4 performance, collecting three RBIs. Chloe Sheppard joined Holmes with a 4-for-4 game at the plate, scoring two runs and adding an RBI. Jakayla Williams and Gracie Nelson each collected two hits and two RBIs, with Synya Edwards joining with a pair of RBIs off a 1-for-3 line at the dish. Coastal - North ran wild on the base paths, amassing four stolen bases for the game.

Two days later in Dothan, Ala., the Governors managed revenge over the Coyotes and took both games to eventually split the four-game set. Wallace - Dothan took game one 5-4 in walk-off fashion, scoring a pair of runs to break the hearts of the 'Yotes. Meanwhile, momentum from the walk-off win carried over to the series finale as Wallace - Dothan scored a 9-3 win over Coastal - North to wrap the conference series.

In the walk-off loss, Coastal led 4-3 entering the final frame, but a single and a walk to open the bottom of the seventh inning came back to haunt the Coyotes. Destiny Holmes added two more hits in the defeat, with Chloe Sheppard and Synya Edwards joining with two hits apiece. Edwards paced the 'Yotes with two RBIs. From the circle, Bayleigh Elton opened the game with four innings of work, allowing two earned runs off just two hits. Abbie Huff was charged with the loss with 2 1/3 innings of relief work, giving up the two runs in the seventh.

Wallace - Dothan kept the scoring rolling in the series finale later on Saturday, scoring seven runs across the first three innings to put the Coyotes deep in the hole. The deficit proved to be too much as Wallace - Dothan forced the series split. Destiny Holmes added another hit in the 9-3 loss in the finale, giving her 10 hits total across the four-game set. Meanwhile, Bayleigh Elton drove in a run off a 1-for-2 performance at the plate, collecting a walk in the process, and Gracie Nelson notched an RBI after going 1-for-3 as the Coastal leadoff batter.

Despite the two losses to wrap up the four-game series with Wallace - Dothan, the Coyotes of Coastal - North are 6-2 across the last eight games played against conference foes, with the 'Yotes looking to build on that with more conference action ahead.

ACCC Action Rolls On
