BREWTON, Ala. - For Joleigh Parmer, Coastal Alabama Community College became more than just a place to earn a degree. It became a place where she found her path, her people, and her purpose.
During her senior year of high school, Joleigh knew she wanted to continue playing volleyball while pursuing a degree in nursing. When she met Coach Steven Dickey at Coastal Alabama, she immediately felt she had found the right fit.
"As a first-generation college student, receiving an athletic scholarship made a huge difference for me," she shared.
With additional support from Coastal's staff, including a foundation scholarship that helped cover housing and meals, Joleigh was able to fully step into the college experience.
At the Brewton campus, Coastal quickly became home.
Living in the Lakeview apartments and spending time on campus allowed her to build strong friendships and a sense of community. Some of her favorite memories were the simple ones, spending time with teammates in the dorm courtyard after long days of classes and practice or gathering together in the café.
As a first-generation college student, Joleigh also faced challenges adjusting to college life while balancing athletics and academics.
"There were times when trying to stay on track academically and prepare for transferring felt overwhelming," she said.
With the support of those around her, she found her footing.
Her advisor, Mrs. Taylor, played a key role in helping her navigate the process. From planning classes to ensuring she met nursing school requirements, Joleigh says that support made all the difference.
"She even helped me get into a class I realized I still needed at the last minute, and now that class has allowed me to complete everything required for nursing school," Joleigh said.
Through hard work and determination, Joleigh excelled academically, earning both Dean's List and President's List honors during her time at Coastal.
Looking back, she says it is the people who made the biggest impact.
From her coach, who emphasized personal growth and selflessness, to her teammates, professors, advisors, and the SSS TRIO program, Joleigh was surrounded by a support system that encouraged her to succeed.
"Every challenge I faced felt manageable because there was always someone willing to help guide me through it," she said.
Now, as she prepares to graduate, Joleigh reflects on what this milestone represents.
"It represents the long nights studying, doing schoolwork on bus rides and leaning on others when I needed help," she said.
This fall, Joleigh will attend the University of South Alabama to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
"My goal is to become a nurse who advocates for her patients and supports them not only clinically, but emotionally as well," she said.
For Joleigh, Coastal Alabama has been a place of growth, support, and opportunity.
"I truly would not be where I am today without the support system Coastal Alabama gave me, and I will always be grateful for the impact this school has had on my life."
