PATERSON FIELD | MONTGOMERY, Ala. - On a rain-soaked night at Paterson Field in downtown Montgomery, Ala., Coastal Alabama - North Baseball delivered when it mattered most, holding off a furious late rally to defeat Bishop State (Ala.) 10-9 in an elimination game at the ACCC Division II Baseball Championship Tournament.
With the win, the Coyotes stay alive in postseason play and move on to face rival Reid State (Ala.) on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. CT in Montgomery. The winner will advance to the championship final later that evening against Lurleen B. Wallace (Ala.), who would need to be defeated twice in the double-elimination format.
Coastal - North's victory came 48 hours after Bishop State handed the Coyotes a loss to open the tournament, making Thursday night's result a measure of redemption in dramatic fashion.
How It Happened
The Coyotes built an advantage through the middle innings, scoring six runs alone in the fifth inning, and carried that multi-run lead into the late stages before Bishop State mounted a charge, scoring four combined runs across the eighth and ninth innings. With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the final frame for the Wildcats, Coastal - North Head Coach Matt Collins turned to reliever Harrison Hicks, who recorded the final out to secure the save and preserve the one-run victory.
Offensively, Coastal - North tallied 10 runs on 12 hits, capitalizing on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning throughout the contest.
Jesse Lord led the charge with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double, two RBIs, a walk, and a run scored. Reni Mason added two hits in five at-bats with a double, RBI, and a run, while Cooper Cantrell also collected a pair of hits and crossed the plate once.
Ashton Hardy and Peyton Martin each delivered clutch extra-base hits, with both recording doubles and driving in two runs apiece. Xavier Brown sparked the offense at the bottom of the lineup, reaching base twice, scoring three runs, driving in one, and swiping two bases. Sam Guth contributed an RBI, a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base, while Tucker Carlos added a run and a steal.
Starting pitcher TJ Hauser provided a strong outing on the mound, working 7.2 innings to earn the win. Hauser scattered eight hits, allowed five earned runs, walked one, and struck out eight, keeping Coastal in control through much of the game despite the challenging weather conditions.
Meanwhile, Bishop State finished with nine runs on 11 hits and two errors, nearly completing the comeback before falling just short in the final inning.
Now, with momentum and postseason hopes intact, the Coyotes turn their attention to Reid State in another win-or-go-home matchup Friday afternoon. A victory would send Coastal - North to the championship round against LBW with a chance to force a decisive final game under the tournament's double-elimination structure.
