BREWTON, Ala. - The Coastal Alabama North Baseball team managed to split a conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon, March 27, hosting No. 13 Enterprise State (Ala.) in the process. In a shootout in game one, the Coyotes came away with an impressive 13-12 victory, using a comeback after trailing 6-1 early. However, the Boll Weevils bounced back in game two and handed Coastal North a 14-5 loss. Both games were scheduled seven-inning contests as Coastal North sees the overall record move to 15-20 and 9-13 in the ACCC.
Runs Come in Bunches
In game one, the Coyotes hit the scoreboard first in the first inning, but allowed six runs for Enterprise State across the second and third frames. Trailing 6-1, Coastal North put together a monster seven-run inning in the fourth to retake the lead. Enterprise State managed six more runs across the next two innings, while Coastal North tallied five across the fifth and sixth. Leading 13-12 entering the seventh inning, the Coastal North pitching staff worked a scoreless frame to secure the big win over the 13th-ranked team in the NJCAA D-II Baseball standings.
Coastal North collected 10 hits in game one, led by Pace Young who finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Ethan McAnally followed Young in the lineup and managed a 1-for-2 performance with a pair of hit-by-pitches, and Jeremiah Gary led off the lineup with three runs scored after collecting two doubles and two walks. For McAnally, the first baseman collected three RBIs and scored a run himself. Rustin Pope also finished game one with multiple RBIs, driving in two after a 1-for-4 day at the plate. Overall, the Coastal North offense worked seven walks and struck out just four times.
On the mound, Jay Davis got the start and tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing 13 hits and 10 earned runs. He struck out four Boll Weevils. Harrison Hicks came into the game in the sixth inning and managed to close out the game with 1 1/3 scoreless frames to earn the win on the rubber. Hicks allowed only two hits and struck out three.
In game two, the Enterprise State offense sparked and pushed across 14 runs off 13 hits, with the big inning coming in the third where the Boll Weevils scored nine runs. Coastal North trailed 12-0 after three innings, but cut into the lead some over the next three innings with five runs. However, the big start at the plate for Enterprise State was the difference as the Boll Weevils forced a series split.Â
Ethan McAnally managed a 2-for-4 game two batting line, collecting two RBIs in the process. Pace Young added another hit to his day, finishing 1-for-4. Near the bottom of the order, Broox Hart produced an RBI following a 2-for-3 game, while Will Smith finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Six pitchers were used in the game two defeat. Kyle Liner was the lone Coyote on the mound to work a scorless frame.Â
What's Ahead
Coastal North and Enterprise State were originally scheduled for an additional doubleheader on Friday, March 28, but that has officially been postponed. The Coyotes' next games are now scheduled for Monday afternoon, March 31 in Montgomery, Ala. as Coastal North plays a non-conference doubleheader at Faulkner University (Ala.). Monday's DH is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT.
